Currencies

Moonbase supports international currencies on multiple levels

Written By Tobias Lønnerød Madsen

When talking about currency support for your Moonbase account, we distinguish between the follow 3 types of currencies:

  • Presentment currencies: These are currencies you can sell to customers in

  • Payout currency: This is the currency of your bank account, which you get paid in

  • Settlement currencies: These are the currencies we hold in Moonbase, before paying you

Be sure to read our article on Fees & Costs to understand what fees are applied to payments using local presentment currencies.

Presentment currencies

To support a truly global audience, being able to offer local prices in local currencies is important. These currencies are called presentment currencies, and is what your customers will see on your website and in checkouts. You switch them on in Account settings > Payments, under Pricing configuration:

The Pricing configuration section in Account settings > Payments: tax mode set to Currency based, and EUR, USD and GBP switched on among the available currencies.

We support over 100 different currencies, with more being added occasionally. When enabling these, Moonbase will automatically convert prices you have, for customers in relevant territories, showing them pricing in their local currency. When Moonbase converts a price, the currency conversion fee is built into the exchange rate the customer is shown. You can also set a price in a currency yourself, so it doesn’t move with exchange rates and looks right for that market: open the variation’s Pricing section and click Show N other currencies. A currency left on Auto-Converted keeps being converted. On a price you set yourself in a currency other than EUR or USD, you pay the conversion fee instead:

A pricing variation's Pricing section with 149 EUR as the price and the other currencies opened: NOK and USD set by hand, GBP, DKK and SEK left Auto-Converted.

When Moonbase converts a price, it rounds the result so it looks like a natural price. You choose how with Price prettification, in the same place. It only affects converted prices, never ones you set yourself or your default currency:

The Price prettification select open on Round to .99, with None, Round to .95 and Round to whole below it.

These strategies accommodate a range of strategies when rounding converted numbers, to make sure prices stay appealing for your customers.

Payout currency

Eventually, money earned on sales will be paid out to your bank account. You choose the currency we pay you in when you add your bank account: Account settings > Account > Payout configuration > Set up account, where you pick the Account currency and fill in the bank details for it. While your account is being verified, you add it on the Verification page instead:

The Create payout account dialog with NOK as the account currency, the account holder Acme Audio AS, Business as the recipient type and an account number field.

If sales are in a different currency than your payout account currency, a conversion is done in the process of transferring the money to you, using the standard mid-market rates and fees that Wise provides. In cases where you want to handle the conversion yourself, you can set your account to be a EUR/USD account, in which case your bank will handle the conversion from EUR/USD to your actual account currency.

On a sale’s page under Sales, the payout is shown in your payout currency. Until the sale is paid out, that amount is converted at the day’s exchange rate and marked “≈”; once it is paid out, it shows the final amount. Dashboard figures are not converted: each is shown in the currency the sale was made in.

Settlement currencies

Since Moonbase is the Merchant of Record, we receive money from sales into our account, to handle payment fees, collect and remit taxes, and more. This money is kept in our internally supported settlement currencies before being paid out to merchants. Because of this, you may occasionally see orders with payouts in EUR and USD before we convert it to your payout currency on the day of payout.
