Use these promotional codes in marketing campaigns to drive conversions

Written By Tobias Lønnerød Madsen

Whether you’re partnering up with creators to market your products, or you run your own campaigns, using coupons to drive conversions is a good tool to have. Coupons are similar to Product Discounts, except that customers apply them by entering a code at checkout:

The hosted checkout with the coupon LAUNCH25 applied: 25% off Helios Synth, so 149.00 EUR becomes 111.75 EUR.

When we talk about coupons, we actually distinguish between two different things:

  1. “Coupon”: this is the discount being applied to items

  2. “Coupon Code”: this is a code to apply said discount

For a coupon to be redeemable by customers, you need to add codes for them to apply to their purchases, and the discount needs to be set up. Each coupon can only be redeemed once per purchase, no matter how many codes of the same coupon may be applied.

Configuring the discount

Just like Product Discounts , coupons center around a discount to be applied to items in orders. The discount itself can be a percentage based discount, or a flat amount, and you can also limit the number of subscription payments it will be valid for. A new coupon starts at 0% off and can't be combined: on the items it applies to, it replaces any product, promotion or offer discount, and it can't be used together with another coupon. Switch on Coupon can be combined to let it stack, and choose what it can be combined with (left empty, Combinable with allows every type):

The coupon's Discount section with "Coupon can be combined" on and "Combinable with" open, set to Product discounts and Offer discounts but not Other coupons.

In the example above, we’ve configured this coupon to only be combinable with product discounts and offers, not other coupons.

Applying restrictions

To further narrow down how a coupon or code within may be used, we allow a number of restrictions:

The coupon's Restrictions section: no product restrictions yet, product and bundle pickers, max redemptions, max redemptions per code and a time span.

Adding product or bundle restrictions allow you to choose which products can receive the coupon discount, and you can even narrow down to the specific pricing variation of each product or bundle.

To limit how often it can be used, set Max redemptions (across all of the coupon's codes) or Max redemptions per code. This will prevent further uses of the coupon once the limit is reached, and is great for “limited offers”.

Lastly, you can adjust the time span of when the coupon should be redeemable, to prevent customers redeeming coupons after a sale is over. A coupon has no minimum order amount. For “spend X, save Y”, use a whole-cart offer with a Cart total condition instead.

Adding codes

As the last step, add some codes so customers can redeem the coupon: Codes > Add. Paste your own, one per line, or let Moonbase generate them: pick the Number of codes, the Code length (random part) and an optional Prefix and Suffix, then Generate. Download codes saves the list as a file. Codes can use the letters A to Z, digits and dashes.

Be aware that coupon codes will be case insensitive, and always presented as uppercased codes.

The Add redeemable coupon codes dialog with eight generated LAUNCH- codes, the generator settings and the time span.

Similarly to the coupon itself, you can also restrict individual codes to a time span in which they should be redeemable. This is useful if you want to periodically add codes to a coupon, but with different expiry dates.

If the same code belongs to several coupons, the customer gets each of those coupons that fits their cart and can be combined with the others; ones that are used up, expired or for other products are skipped. For a coupon meant for one person, give them a code of their own: a shared code can use up someone else's coupon.

Coupons in campaigns and automations

On accounts with Campaigns or Automations, Used in on a coupon lists the campaigns and automations that hand it out, with their status. The personal codes they create for each recipient are listed under Codes too, each with a line saying where it came from and who it was for. Check Used in before you change what a coupon gives.
