Who can sell on Moonbase

What you can and can't sell on Moonbase, whether you can sell as an individual or a business, and where we can pay you

Written By Tobias Lønnerød Madsen

Moonbase is built for people who make digital products: plugins, apps, sound libraries, courses and everything in between. Because Moonbase is the merchant of record, we are the ones who sell your products to your customers, collect the payment and handle the tax. That means there are a few rules about what we can sell for you, and who we can work with.

You can sign up and try everything in demo mode first. These rules come into play when you verify your account to go live (see Going live: demo mode and verification).

What you can sell

Anything digital that is yours to sell, or licensed to you to sell. When you verify your account, we ask what you mainly sell, and anything else you sell, from these categories:

  • Audio plugins and virtual instruments

  • Sample packs, presets and sound libraries

  • DAWs, audio tools and other music software

  • Music releases, stems and sheet music

  • Other desktop, mobile or web software, including subscriptions

  • SDKs, libraries and developer tools

  • Games and game assets

  • Fonts, graphics, 3D, templates, video and photo assets

  • Courses, tutorials, e-books and written publications

If what you sell doesn't fit any of these, choose Something else and tell us what it is in a line. Someone on our team will take a look.

What we can't sell

These are listed in the same question, under We cannot sell these, each with the reason:

  • Physical goods: Moonbase only sells digital products, so there is nothing to ship.

  • Services, consulting or custom work: Moonbase sells products, not hours.

  • Products you do not hold the rights to sell: every product has to be yours to sell, or licensed to you to sell.

  • Adult content: our payment providers do not support it.

  • Gambling, betting or cash-prize games: it's a licensed activity we aren't licensed for.

  • Investment products, trading signals, crypto tokens or NFTs: regulated or high-risk financial activity we do not support.

  • Gift cards or stored value: stored value is regulated separately from selling a product.

If your main product falls into one of these, we can't open an account for you, and the form asks you to confirm before it ends your application.

Who can sell

Both individuals and businesses can sell on Moonbase:

  • An individual sells in their own name. That includes sole traders and freelancers, even with a registered trade. You don't need a company to sell on Moonbase.

  • A business is a company, partnership or other legal entity of its own, such as a Ltd, GmbH or AS.

Either way, the account owner verifies who they are with a secure ID check. For a business, so does everyone who owns or controls 25% or more of it.

The first verification step, asking who is selling (an individual or a business), where you are based and what you mainly sell

Whoever will run the account signs up for it themselves, and becomes its owner. We can't open an account on someone else's behalf.

Where you can be based

We work with sellers in most countries, but there are some where we can't currently onboard businesses. Sign-up asks where you or your business are based, and tells you straight away if it's one of them, before any account is created.

Where we can pay you

We pay you by bank transfer, to a bank account in your legal name: your own name as an individual, or your business's registered name. Banks in most countries work, but there are a few countries whose banks we can't pay into. If you add an account at one of them, you'll see "We can't pay out to banks in ..." and can add one somewhere else.

Your bank doesn't have to be in the same country as you. Multi-currency accounts, like the ones Wise, Revolut and Payoneer offer, are common and perfectly fine. See Getting Paid and Payout configuration for how payouts work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a registered company?
No. You can sell as an individual, and sole traders do too.

Can I sell web apps or software-as-a-service?
Yes, as long as it's software you sell, one-off or as a subscription. That's "Other desktop, mobile or web software, including subscriptions". Custom development or consulting can't be sold, since it's a service.

Can I sell to businesses?
Yes. Your customers can buy as a business and add their tax ID at checkout, and the invoice that comes with their receipt shows it.

Do I need my own Stripe or PayPal account?
No. Moonbase takes the payments for you, and the payment methods your customers see are chosen for them automatically. See Fees & Costs for what it costs.

Is there a list of the countries you can't work with?
Not here. Sign-up tells you if we can't take on businesses where you're based. If you're unsure, ask us before you sign up.
