Mailjet

Keep newsletter subscribers in sync between Moonbase and Mailjet, organize them into contact lists, and import your Mailjet contacts

Written By Tobias Lønnerød Madsen

If you send your newsletters with Mailjet, connecting it to Moonbase does two things for you:

  1. Customers who subscribe through Moonbase, at checkout, when they sign up or from your newsletter form, are added to Mailjet automatically.

  2. Your Mailjet contacts are sorted into contact lists that match your customer groups in Moonbase, like the owners of each of your products.

Getting started

Mailjet uses an API key together with a secret key. Open the API keys page of your Mailjet account, create a key for Moonbase, and copy both the API key and its secret key.

Then go to Account settings > Integrations, open the Available tab, click Set up next to Mailjet, paste them into API key and Secret key, and click Enable:

Enabling the integration does a full sync of your subscribers, which can trigger automations you have set up in Mailjet. Consider pausing them during the first sync.

Once enabled, it syncs every Moonbase customer who has opted in to your newsletter, with their email address and name, and adds them to a Mailjet contact list for each group they're in. Consent stays in sync both ways: an unsubscribe in Mailjet reaches Moonbase within seconds, and the most recent change always wins. If you delete a customer in Moonbase, they're taken off those lists too.

Since Moonbase automatically keeps track of which customers own which products through groups, you'll have a contact list for the owners of each of your products, kept up to date for you. Your own lists and segments become Mailjet contact lists too (see Customer groups and segments), so you can send to exactly the right people from Mailjet.

Moonbase works with the contacts of the Mailjet account your API key belongs to. Use a key from the account your newsletter lists are in.

Importing your Mailjet contacts

If you send campaigns from Moonbase, you can bring your Mailjet contacts in: open Mailjet under Account settings > Integrations, go to its Settings tab, turn on Import Mailjet subscribers as contacts under Import contacts and click Save.

Mailjet's Settings tab, with the saved keys under Connection, and Import Mailjet subscribers as contacts turned on under Import contacts, the status Up to date, and Re-sync contacts

Everyone on your own Mailjet contact lists who hasn't unsubscribed or been excluded is added as a guest, with nothing sent to them. The lists Moonbase created for your groups are left out. Because Mailjet can't tell Moonbase when someone subscribed, an import only opts in customers who haven't already decided either way in Moonbase.

Unlike the other email tools, Mailjet doesn't let Moonbase know when someone new subscribes. New Mailjet subscribers come in when you click Re-sync contacts, which reads all your contacts again, while unsubscribes still reach Moonbase straight away. See Import newsletter subscribers.

Frequently asked questions

Which customers are sent to Mailjet?
Only customers who opted in to your newsletter. Customers who bought from you without opting in aren't added.

A new Mailjet subscriber isn't in Moonbase. Why?
Mailjet doesn't announce new subscribers, so they come in with Re-sync contacts. Also check that Import Mailjet subscribers as contacts is turned on, and that they're subscribed in Mailjet, not unsubscribed or excluded.

Does Mailjet get my products and sales?
No. The Mailjet integration syncs your contacts, their consent and their lists, not orders or products. If you'd like your sales in your email tool, have a look at Klaviyo or MailerLite.

Can I send automated emails without Mailjet?
Yes. With Automations, which is in beta, you can send emails from Moonbase when customers sign up, start a trial, buy or leave a checkout.
