Price Variations

Set up the variations that convert customers the most effectively

Written By Tobias Lønnerød Madsen

When you sell products or bundles through Moonbase, they are always sold as a variation of the base product or bundle, and you can have as many variations as you need. These different variations can be a mix between one-off payments for perpetual licenses, or recurring subscription payments. You could also have different variations with different licensing entitlements, to be able to sell more premium packages of the same product:

One of the variations will be the default variation, and picked when a specific variation is not explicitly selected while adding to cart or purchasing directly. This variation is also used to determine the default value of the product, used when calculating price changes for partial bundles or affiliate product commission for bundle sales. You can change the default variation by clicking the check-mark button on the desired variation.

Every variation will have a configurable ID, which can be used to select the specific variation when adding buttons or links to your website. Purchases of variations that are not the default will also include the name of the variation in the checkout UI, so it’s clear what variation is being bought.

Pricing Tiers

To be able to offer volume discounts on bigger one-off purchases, you can add pricing tiers to your variation. These tiers allow you to set a new price at different quantity break-points:

In this example, we have three tiers:

  • For purchases of 2 or more, the price of each item will be 89€

  • For purchases of 5 or more, the price of each item will be 69€

  • For purchases of 10 or more, the price of each item will be 49€

It’s important to consider that these prices are per copy of an item, so in the case a customer would buy 10 copies, the total amount would be 490€ in this scenario.

Licensing Overrides

Some variations may need different license entitlements to differentiate it from the base product settings. This can be done by adding a licensing override to the variation:

These overrides can adjust the number of seats on licenses created by purchases of this variation, as well as the eligibility of offline activations. Note that these settings are only applicable if you are using Moonbase for your licensing solution.
